Objective: During the aging period, catabolic processes are greater than anabolic processes. As a result, cellular efficiency decreases and leads to damage to the function of various organs. The aim of the present study was to study the effect of eight weeks of resistance training at high and moderate intensities on sleep quality and testosterone levels in elderly men.
Method: 36 elderly men aged 60 to 65 years were divided into 3 groups: control, high-intensity resistance training, and resistance or low-intensity training. The resistance training program was common between both groups of subjects and lasted 8 weeks, with 3 sessions per week. The training intensity was 50 to 60% in the moderate training group and 70 to 80% of one repetition maximum in the high-intensity training group. The sleep quality of the subjects was obtained through the Pittsburgh questionnaire. To measure testosterone, a German Zelbio company kit and a competitive sandwich ELISA method were used. Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of covariance and Shapiro-Wilk test.
Findings: The results of the covariance test showed that there was no difference in sleep quality variables and testosterone levels between the high and moderate intensity exercise groups. A significant difference was observed between the two exercise groups and the control group.
Conclusion: High and moderate intensity resistance training significantly increases testosterone and significantly improves sleep quality in elderly men,
Keywords: Resistance training, good quantity, sleep quality, testosterone and elderly men
