Introduction and Objective: One of the essential roles of the scapula is to coordinate shoulder movements at different angles of motion. Considering this issue and the importance of the prevalence of shoulder injuries, the present study aimed to determine the effect of shoulder girdle neuromuscular exercises based on the Sahrmann approach on upper limb function and scapulohumeral rhythm of overhead athletes with scapular dyskinesia.
Methodology: For this study, 30 female athletes in overhead sports (volleyball, basketball, and handball) who had scapular dyskinesia were selected and after completing the consent form, they were divided into two groups, control (15 people) and experimental (15 people). Then, the subjects performed the upper limb Y test for upper limb function and the Keibler test for scapulohumeral rhythm. After evaluating the variables, the subjects in the training group performed the exercises for 8 weeks, and the control group continued their daily lives during this period. ANOVA and paired t-test were used to analyze the data (P≤0.05).
Results: The results showed that training had a significant effect on upper limb function (p=0.001), scapulohumeral rhythm at 0 degrees (p=0.001), 45 degrees (p=0.001), and 90 degrees (p=0.001).
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that applying neuromuscular training with the perspective of Sahrmann leads to improvement of scapulohumeral rhythm and upper limb function. Therefore, performing such exercises is recommended for athletes.
